Supportive Treatments Are A Necessary Part Of Cancer Treatment

Blog

Cancer can be a terrible disease that is hard physically and emotionally on the patient. It can also be emotionally hard on their family members. Not only is the disease hard on the body, but the treatments are also. To kill the cancer cells, the treatments must be strong, which is just so difficult and wearing on the patient. That is why there are more treatments than just curative treatments. Supportive treatments are just as necessary as well.

Supportive Treatments

Curative treatments are treatments that are designed to cure cancer. Those are things like chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation treatment. Palliative care is designed to help people with their care after they have decided to stop all treatments. These treatments are intended for end-of-life care and can include pain management. Cancer support treatments are designed to help with all the adverse effects of the curative treatments and living with cancer. These treatments will help the patient and can help their family members as well. There are several things that make up supportive care.

Support Groups

Many people might not think of support groups as a treatment for cancer. Still, the fact is that they can very much be part of supportive treatment. There are groups for both patients and family members, as well as groups that are for the entire family. Support groups are in this category because it is beneficial to talk with someone who has been there and done that or is currently in the middle of it. Support groups for family members and caregivers will let them have a place where they can safely let go of what they are feeling without making the cancer patient feel bad. It's the same for cancer patients. Having a place where they can rant about their illness can help the patient feel better, especially if their caregivers aren't in the same room.

Nutritional Support

Nutrition can be complicated for cancer patients because the treatments can make it hard to keep any food down, and cancer can change how food tastes. Having a nutritionist come and work with the patient will help them find foods they can eat which will stay down. That will help the patient from losing a lot of weight during their treatment.

Cancer is not an easy disease to fight. It is really destructive to the patient and their family. Supportive care is necessary for people who are going through cancer treatment.

ER or Urgent Care? How to Decide when Ill

I am a mother of four wonderful children, and like other parents, I have been to my fair share of health care clinics. It seems like my children are always getting scrapes and coming down with colds. When I was a new parent, I never knew whether I should take my injured or ill child to the emergency room or local urgent care facility. I received some simple advice from a seasoned parent that made my decisions easier that I want to pass onto all new parents, along with other health tips I've learned. he told me that she tended to take her children to the ER when they were bleeding or had very high temperatures and took them to the local urgent care for any other problem. I have followed her advice ever since, and my children remain healthy and happy!
